10-Day Vegetarian Japan Itinerary: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka
By the TripRai team · 17 October 2026 · 7 min read
Japan is wonderful to explore as a vegetarian, but a restaurant labelled vegetarian-friendly is not proof that every broth or sauce is vegetarian. This 10-day route balances Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with food planning, sensible travel days and room to rest.
The 10-day route at a glance
Stay four nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto and two in Osaka. This is a sample route, not a booked trip. Arrival and departure sightseeing depend on your actual flight times.
- 1–4Base: TokyoPlan: Asakusa, Ueno, Meiji Jingu, Shibuya and one museum or digital-art experience
- 5–7Base: KyotoPlan: Train from Tokyo; Gion, Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Arashiyama
- 8–9Base: OsakaPlan: Short train from Kyoto; Osaka Castle, Dotonbori and one flexible day
- 10Base: DeparturePlan: Airport transfer and flight; shopping only if the flight schedule allows
Days 1–4: Tokyo without rushing
On arrival, choose a hotel base in Asakusa, Ueno or Shibuya and plan only an optional local walk. You cannot promise an afternoon attraction without knowing when the flight lands, how long immigration takes or when the hotel is ready.
Group Senso-ji and Ueno on nearby days. Put Meiji Jingu and Shibuya together, then reserve another day for a museum, Akihabara or teamLab. Check ticket times and museum closures before fixing the order.
Days 5–7: Kyoto temples and neighbourhoods
Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by shinkansen, allow time to get to the station and drop your bags, then enjoy an easy walk around Gion or Nishiki Market.
Visit Fushimi Inari early if possible. Keep Kiyomizu-dera and nearby historic streets together. Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji involve more travel, so avoid squeezing extra distant sights into that day.
Days 8–10: Osaka and the journey home
Kyoto and Osaka are close enough for a straightforward rail transfer; many ordinary services do not need seat reservations. Spend an evening around Dotonbori and choose between Osaka Castle, shopping or a theme park on the next day.
If you choose Universal Studios Japan, treat it as the main activity for that day. On departure day, allow your airport transfer and international check-in buffer before considering any final shopping or meal.
How to check vegetarian meals in Japan
Dashi may contain bonito fish flakes, and sauces can include fish stock, meat broth or oyster sauce. Even dishes that look vegetable-based may not fit your diet. Vegan restaurants are a useful starting point, but check the exact branch, opening hours and dish ingredients.
For Jain travellers, vegan or pure-vegetarian is not the same as Jain. Ask specifically about onion, garlic, root vegetables and how the meal is prepared. A restaurant with no verified Jain dish should be labelled unconfirmed, not recommended as guaranteed Jain-safe.
- Check the restaurant's current menu and opening hours before travelling.
- Ask about broth, sauces and garnishes, not only the main ingredient.
- Keep a translated dietary card on your phone.
- Have a backup meal option near the hotel or station.
What will a 10-day Japan trip cost?
Budget separately for flights, nine hotel nights, intercity trains, local transport, food and admission tickets. Prices change with season, hotel class and booking date; avoid treating a sample itinerary total as a live quote.

Questions
Is Japan easy for vegetarian travellers?
It is possible with planning, especially in larger cities, but fish-based dashi and sauces mean you should verify individual dishes.
Is vegan food automatically Jain?
No. Vegan food may contain onion, garlic, potatoes and other root vegetables. Confirm ingredients and preparation with the restaurant.
How many nights should I spend in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
For a first 10-day route, four nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto and two in Osaka is one practical option.
Can I visit attractions on the day I land?
Only if your actual arrival time leaves enough time after immigration, transport and hotel check-in. Treat arrival-day sightseeing as optional.
