7-Day Japan Itinerary: Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka

Vegetarian, Jain & halal food
Vegetarian food takes planning in Japan — dashi (fish stock) hides in many dishes. Look for shojin ryori (Buddhist temple cuisine) in Kyoto and ask for 'no dashi'.
Travelling with kids or parents
With kids or elderly parents, skip the full Fushimi Inari climb and keep one hotel per city to avoid hauling bags.
Good to know
- Book shinkansen seats a few days ahead in peak season.
- Get an IC card (Suica/ICOCA) for local trains.
- Many temples close by 5 pm.
