How Much Does a Trip to Japan Cost from India? A Real Plan, Line by Line
The short answer
About ₹1.2 lakh for 4 days in Tokyo from Delhi, return flights included, for one traveller in a mid-range hotel. Flights are over half of it; a full day on the ground came to about ₹15,500.
A real plan, line by line
Delhi ⇄ Tokyo Haneda, recent fares
3 nights in Asakusa, about ₹11,000 a night
Ramen, tempura, tonkatsu and izakaya meals, about ₹3,100 a day
Metro rides, plus airport trains in Delhi and Tokyo
Tokyo National Museum and a Sumida river cruise; most shrines are free
Source: TripRai plan for 1 traveller, Delhi → Tokyo, 10–13 October 2026, mid-range hotel, balanced pace. Flights from recent fares; local prices converted at 1 JPY = ₹0.61 (rate of 2 October 2026).
A day on the ground
On a full day in Tokyo, the plan came to ₹15,160–15,770: hotel ₹11,000, three meals ₹3,000–3,600, local rides ₹390–650 and any tickets.
Adding Kyoto: Another TripRai plan (5 days, Tokyo and Kyoto) priced the return bullet train at ₹17,454. Kyoto adds a train, not a flight.
Airport transfer: Haneda to Asakusa by monorail and metro was ₹450 each way; a taxi or app ride was ₹4,900–6,700.
What makes it cheaper
- Travel in winter (December to February, outside New Year) or early June.
- Book flights early; they are the biggest single cost.
- Business hotels and capsule hotels cost far less than Tokyo's mid-range hotels.
- Set lunches and convenience-store meals are cheap and good.
- Share rooms: two people in one room halves the hotel cost per person.
What makes it dearer
- Cherry blossom (late March to early April), Golden Week and New Year push hotel prices up.
- Adding more cities adds trains: Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto by bullet train is about ₹17,500 return.
- Taxis: a single airport taxi can cost as much as a day of food.
